Most OS/2 users are quite satisfied with IBM's progress on Warp Server, but
complain bitterly about deemphasis of the OS/2 desktop client. In fact, parts
of IBM actually try to get customers to switch from OS/2 to Microsoft's Windows
NT, because NT's instability generates far more service revenue per seat.
Now IBM has heard the message loud and clear in a way they cannot ignore.
A large bank, rumored to be Deutsche Bank of Germany, one of IBM's largest
customers, has told them flat out - if IBM's neglect forces the bank off OS/2,
they will drop ALL products and services from IBM in
favor of other vendors. Yikes!
Sources within IBM have leaked an internal memo informing delinquent
departments of the importance of OS/2 to IBM, its customers, and to IBM's
eCommerce and Java efforts. I suspect we will be seeing the new Warp 5.0
client sooner rather than later now.
