Nov 1998 - Strong sales of NDS (Novell Directory Services) and Internet enabled network operating systems boosted Novell's profit well beyond analyst's predictions ($.12/share vs $.09/share). Their $42 million profit was up from $7.17 million the previous year. This should go a long way in establishing renewed confidence in the long term viability of Novell.

With analysts projecting Microsoft won't field a stable product competitive with NetWare 5.0 with NDS until well into 2000, Novell has the opportunity to become too deeply entrenched in the directory services to be deposed by Microsoft's relatively weak Active Directory.
