Nov 1998 - Cisco, who's near monopoly in Internet routers is comparable to
Microsoft's hold on the PC desktop, had committed to Microsoft Active Directory
as the directory service for its routers, showing no interest in Novell's NDS
(Novell Directory Services). Now, at Comdex, Cisco and Novell are jointly
demonstrating NDS managing and reconfiguring Cisco routers from a central
administration point.
Negotiations by Cisco competitors Nortel and Lucent for NDS licensing
probably spurred Cisco into cooperating with Novell for fear of being left
behind. Both Nortel and Lucent signed major agreements with Novell last week.
These actions are further evidence of just how much trouble Active Directory
is in (and thus just how much trouble Windows 2000 is in). One industry
analyst commented, "Microsoft won't have anything like this for at least 2
years". Others are less optimistic.
