Mar 8 2000 - Novell has announced SSLizer, a "network appliance" designed to offload encryption duties from the Web server. A Web server can serve around 400 HTML requests per second, but when SSL comes into play, that can drop to under 10. Novell says SSLizer will improve SSL service by a factor of 10 or so. Products using SSLizer should start shipping before the end of 2000.

Novell is not alone in seeing this need. Intel is, of this date, advertising a similar device through banner ads on news sites.
