This is considered the "proof of the pudding" release. If Beta 3 is not
feature complete and stable, Windows 2000 (formerly Windows NT v5.0) is in
"deep do", as our former President would put it. Closely watched will be
Active Directory, Microsoft's competitor to Novell's NDS (Novell
Directory Services). Active Directory is badly needed to ease administration
of large NT based networks. Microsoft's current Domain system is extremely
difficult to administer beyond the department level.
While Active Directory is short on scope and completeness compared to NDS,
a product already 6 years in service, many corporations are trying to maintain
"Microsoft Purity" and resist deploying NDS. Microsoft has encouraged this
with an intensive FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) campaign, noteworthy for
"inaccurate" statements Microsoft has been forced to retract.
