Microsoft, with the release of its SQL Server v7.0, maintains it plays with the
big boys now, with a fully enterprise scale database. 7.0 provides much better
performance and many high end features lacking in its predecessors. Recent
tests by a consulting firm show SQL Server 7.0 is now about the same speed as
Oracle 8 on the same machine (but Informix was faster than either).
Oracle's chief Larry Ellison responded by offering a cool $1,000,000.00 to
anyone who could demonstrate a particular standard SQL query at better than
1/100th as fast as Oracle's best published speed. 1/100th as fast? How can
that be when they run about the same speed on the same machine? Well, SQL
Server runs only on Windows NT, while Oracle 8 runs on real enterprise class
computers (as well as on NT and Linux).
