Caere, the company that has established an effective monopoly on OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software is patrolling auction sites in search of anyone trying to sell software packages. A person who had a legitimately purchased Caere Pagekeeper Pro 3 package which he could not use attempted to sell it through eBay. Caere demanded eBay remove the auction item, which they did. You can find full details in Ed Foster's InfoWorld column.

You may think this is an isolated incident by a single software company, but it is not. In this case Caere backed down and allowed the item to be reinstated, (with inclusion of a warning that the sale was not sanctioned by Caere). The only reason they backed down was that UCITA has not yet passed in most states. Once UCITA is well established, they will have the legal right to confiscate any software you attempt to sell because attempting to sell it is a violation of the shrinkwrap license agreement.

As a business person you are about to be screwed very, very deeply by "Big Software", and your legislators are more than happy to help - they've heard from Billy, but they haven't heard from you.
